Powerstories Theatre College Intern Program

This program is designed to give real-life experience of working in a professional producing theatre to college students majoring and minoring in the various fields within the Theatre Arts.  For most B.A. and B.F.A. Theatre students, participation will result in earned credits.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

  • On-Stage Performance – being a cast member in one of the Power Plays produced each year and fulfilling all requirements therein throughout the run of the show.
  • Technical [Light and/or Sound Operation] – learning from, shadowing, and assisting the Powerstories Technical team with lighting and sound for one of the Power Plays
  • Stage Management– learning from, shadowing, and assisting Power Stories Stage Manager with their duties during rehearsals and being a part of the backstage crew during performances for one of the Power Plays

INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

All POWERSTORIES internships share the same basic expectations. At a minimum, applicants must:

  • Possess the knowledge and skills required to work successfully in a specific department of the theater.
  • Be socially mature and self-confident.
  • Be able to take direction and criticism well.
  • Be able to digest new information quickly and apply it productively.
  • Be consistent and dependable in their work habits.
  • Have good communication skills.
  • Enjoy multi-tasking and creative problem solving.
  • Work comfortably and effectively in a highly collaborative environment.
  • A basic knowledge of computing is essential. Powerstories uses a wide assortment of computer equipment and software.

INTERNSHIP OUTLINES

ACTING/PERFORMANCE INTERNSHIP

               Length of Internship- 7 weeks per production/ Possible 14 weeks per semester

 Performance interns will have the opportunity to work alongside professional actors and directors in our productions throughout the season. They will be able to audition for any appropriate roles in the production, and may have opportunities to understudy as well.  All interns will get performance opportunities within Powerstories 60-seat black box space.

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interns MUST COMPLETE APPLICATION and AUDITION for each show they wish to participate in during a season.
  • Interns are full members of the cast and must attend all required rehearsals and all performances.
  • Most Acting Internships are 6 weeks in length.
  • In addition to rehearsal and performance requirements, interns will be exposed to the following areas of production:
    • Costume and prop construction and maintenance
    • Make-up for the Stage Actor
    • Lighting
    • Sound
    • Stage Movement

ALL INTERNSHIPS AT POWERSTORIES PROVIDE:

  • Professional Development: Working within a professional theatre can be an adjustment for interns coming straight from an academic environment. Training focuses on communication, conflict management and etiquette in both the rehearsal room and onstage.
  • Strategic Career Planning: Through exposure and mentoring, interns will be guided toward identifying the market in which they want to work post-internship.
  • The Business of Being an Artist: Being an artist is a business and a lifestyle. It is vital to understand networking and how to have an active presence both online and within the community, including materials needed for self-promotion.
  • Job Skills: As a professional actor, it is important to build work experience in fields that offer flexibility while simultaneously establishing a presence within a theatre community.

STAGE MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP

Length of Internship- 7 weeks per production/ possible 14 weeks per semester

The Stage Management/Production Internship provides a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of the work of professional stage managers. This position reports to the Resident Stage Manager, and works closely with the Director, Technical Designers, and other production staff. The Intern will receive professional rehearsal and performance experience and training in Powerstories 60-seat black box space.

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Assist the stage managers during the rehearsal and performance process of a production
  • Setting up rehearsal space and maintaining the rehearsal environment
  • Work closely with administrative and technical departments
  • Help maintain databases, calendars, and production records
  • Assist on any special projects on an as-needed basis
  • Assisting with floor management during the run of the show
  • TRAIN on Use of ETC Lighting console and computer audio/video projection
  • Call show or run Light/sound board for cues as needed
