Powerstories receives The National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from First Lady Michelle Obama.

Girlstories Leadership Theatre is a comprehensive theatre arts program for middle school girls living in Hillsborough County who will be in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades next year. In 2010 GLT was awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House and in 2011 GLT was honored by international star, Josh Groban in front of 12,000 fans.

Powerstories Theatre is a nonprofit theatre that stages true stories to open minds and hearts and inspire action worldwide. We believe that every person has a powerstory to discover and share with others. Our programs increase confidence, awareness, understanding, and deepens appreciation for diversity.

Girlstories Leadership Theatre 2022

Girlstories Leadership Theatre is a comprehensive theatre arts program for middle school girls living in Hillsborough County who will be in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades next year. It is a nationally awarded program that teaches middle school girls confidence and self-awareness while exposing them to complex theatre and performance opportunities.

Girlstories Leadership Theatre 2022

This year Powerstories Theatre will be offering the program in our theatre at 2105 Kennedy Blvd.  The program begins in the summer for a three week workshop, then continues throughout the year for once-a-month meetings on Saturdays. Rising 5th, 6th grade girls will meet in the morning and rising 7th and 8th grade girls will meet in the afternoon.  The program culminates with a performance open to family and friends in a professional theatre space. The girls will: 

  1. Use all the tools needed in theatre to better prepare the performer to self-advocate and contribute to their school community 
  2. Look at women in history and how their contributions have impacted the world
  3. Learn characterization tools based on Stanislavski techniques
  4. Look at musical theatre by performing in two production numbers that will be included in the program
  5. Learn proper vocal technique from a professional music director
  6. Participate in improvisation techniques based on the work of Viola Spolin
  7. Explore movement on the stage.

Dates and times 

June 20 to July 9 – 8:30 am to noon for rising 5th and 6th grade girls (no program on July 4) 

June 20 to July 9 – 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm for rising 7th and 8th grade girls (no program on July 4)

Performance Dates will be July 8 and 9th at the theatre in the evening.  Specific time to be determined. 

Saturday dates throughout the year – to be determined 

Space is extremely limited. There are opportunities for 20 young girls: 10 for each session.
